Roseanne Barr Is Terribly Sorry for Her Horribly Racist Tweet

Roseanne Barr Is Terribly Sorry for Her Horribly Racist Tweet

“Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby” Barr tweeted about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.

ABC has been silent about Barr’s remarks, and given that the revival of her self-titled sitcom had the highest ratings and most viewers of any network TV show this season, the chances of the network cutting its ties with her seem slim. (Wanda Sykes, a writer and consulting producer on the show, did announce on Twitter she “will not be returning” for Season 2, and co-showrunner Whitney Cummings has already departed.*) Whatever viewers the show might have lost due to Barr’s tweet have likely already been shed by the show’s snarky shots at the network’s sitcoms about people of color and its open, if not honest, embrace of Trump-era politics. At ABC upfronts in mid-May, ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey stressed to advertisers that the Roseanne reboot’s upcoming season would focus on “family trials and tribulations” over red-state politics. But unless Barr changes her tune, the sitcom will be dealing with political fallout regardless of what’s actually on screen.

Google Doodle Is Celebrating S.P.L. Sorensen, the Scientist Behind the pH Scale

Google Doodle Is Celebrating S.P.L. Sorensen, the Scientist Behind the pH Scale

By HALLIE DETRICK

Google (GOOGL, -1.81%) is celebrating a little-known but hugely influential scientist with the Google Doodle today.
The Danish scientist S.P.L. (Soren Peder Lauritz) Sorensen is the man who invented the pH scale (remember those pink and blue strips from your high school chemistry class?)
S.P. L. Sorensen developed the method of measuring acidity and alkalinity in 1909 while studying the effect of ion concentration on proteins. Today the method is hugely important for daily necessities like clean water and medicine.

Sorensen was born in Havrebjerg, Denmark 1868. He studied at the University of Copenhagen with the intention of studying medicine, but went on to have a career as a scientist. Sorensen was the head of the prestigious Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen for 37 years, where he worked alongside his second wife, Margrethe Høyrup Sørensen. He worked in the lab until the year before his death at age 71.
With the interactive feature of today’s Google Doodle, you can learn where common foods fall on the scale.

Korean War Veteran Fights to Keep American Flag Flying

A Korean War veteran is speaking out after city officials in Independence, Iowa, voted to take down a giant American flag because maintenance costs were too high.
Officials voted unanimously last month to take the flag down, saying that high winds frequently damage the flag.
On "Fox & Friends," Bill Coulter revealed that the upkeep costs are only $10 a month, and he's willing to pay for it out of his own pocket to keep the stars and stripes flying.

Coulter said he's going to present a proposal to the city council to have individuals and veterans groups pay for the flag.
"We want to get the city out of this altogether and do it with private funding," Coulter said.
But Coulter's daughter, Carol Quass, said military families shouldn't have to bear that cost.
"The vets should not have to pay for that — they've already paid, paid with their lives sometimes," Quass said. "It's sad that there's many other things in the community that they pay for that don't have the significance of the American flag."

Drake's 'Nice for What' Returns to No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100, Lil Baby, Ella Mai & BTS Earn First Top 10s

Drake passes Elvis Presley with his 26th top 10, while BTS earns the first top 10 for a K-pop group.

Drake's "Nice for What" -- which ruled the Billboard Hot 100 chart for its first four weeks on the chart and then spent two weeks at No. 2, below Childish Gambino's "This Is America" -- returns to the summit for a fifth total week at No. 1.
Meanwhile, three artists tally their first Hot 100 top 10s: Lil Baby, whose "Yes Indeed," featuring Drake, vaults from No. 49 to No. 6 following its first full week of tracking; Ella Mai, whose debut hit "Boo'd Up" bumps 11-8; and superstar Korean boy band BTS, whose "Fake Love" launches at No. 10, marking the first Hot 100 top 10 ever for a K-pop group, as parent album Love Yourself: Tear debuts as the group's first No. 1 on the Billboard 200, where it's also the first No. 1 for an album in the K-pop genre.
Let's run down the top 10 of the Hot 100 (dated June 2), which blends all-genre streaming, airplay and sales data. All charts will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (May 30).
Drake's "Nice," released on Young Money/Cash Money/Republic Records, dips 2-3 on the Streaming Songs chart, down 8 percent to 36.8 million U.S. streams in the week ending May 24, according to Nielsen Music. It tumbles 3-10 on Digital Song Sales, with a 10 percent decline to 23,000 downloads sold in the week ending May 24, while backtracking 6-7 on Radio Songs, but with a 2 percent lift to 78.9 million in all-format airplay audience in the week ending May 27.
"Nice" rebounds for a fifth week at No. 1 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts.

Brandon Marshall signs deal with Seattle Seahawks

Former New York Jets and Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall is continuing his NFL career in the Pacific Northwest.

The veteran wide receiver has signed a deal with the Seattle Seahawks, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The development comes after Marshall posted multiple photos of himself wearing Seahawkscolors on his Instagram account Tuesday.
The Giants released the six-time Pro Bowler in April after his only season with the club was sabotaged by an ankle injury. The 34-year-old hauled in just 18 passes for 154 yards over five games with the Giants. He signed with Big Blue last offseason after two seasons with the Jets.
While Marshall will instantly inject a veteran's presence into the Seahawks' locker room, it remains to be seen if he can be anywhere close to the caliber of player he was during his prime with the JetsBearsDolphins and Broncos.
Around The NFL will have more on Marshall joining the Seahawks soon.

ABC cancels 'Roseanne' following Roseanne Barr's racist tweet targeting Obama adviser

ABC has canceled its hit reboot Roseanne following lead Roseanne Barr's racist tweets about former Obama White House adviser Valerie Jarrett on Twitter Tuesday.
Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, issued the statement to USA TODAY, denouncing her comments hours after her apology failed to convince many on Twitter, including the show's consulting producer, Wanda Sykes.
"Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show," the statement read.
Barr's comment, which has now been deleted, was sent in response to a tweet that accused Jarrett of helping "hide" misdeeds for the Obama administration.
"muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj,” Barr wrote, using Jarrett's initials.
Jarrett, 61, is African American and worked for Obama from 2009 to 2017. Barr apologized for the tweet, describing it as "a bad joke."

I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste.
"I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks," Barr said. "I should have known better. Forgive me — my joke was in bad taste."
Sykes followed the apology with a short and simple message of disproval, in which she said she'd pull out as consulting producer on the reboot.
"I will not be returning to @RoseanneOnABC," she wrote on Twitter the same day.
Sykes wasn't the only person who disapproved of Barr's comments, the tweets sparked reaction on the social media site from many who criticized her and ABC for allowing her self-titled show to continue.
Roseanne co-star Sara Gilbert also denounced Barr's comments.

Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least.
"Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show," she tweeted. "I am disappointed in her actions to say the least."
Roseanne's Emma Kenney shared her disapproval.

"I am hurt, embarrassed, and disappointed. The racist and distasteful comments from Roseanne are inexcusable," she wrote.
Writer Danny Zucker also tweeted his disapproval.
"I wrote on the original Roseanne where we used to denounce nativism, racism & homophobia. Nauseating to see what she's become," he wrote. "Looking forward to continue not watching this show."
Actor Don Cheadle called out racism in Barr's tweets.

"you can take @RoseanneOnABC out of racism but you can’t take the racism out of @therealroseanne," he said.
Actress Patricia Arquette also spoke up.

I am repulsed that Valerie Jarret had that racist and bigoted "joke" made at her expense and I am sickened that any Black or Muslim person has to keep hearing this sickness in 2018.
"I am repulsed that Valerie Jarret had that racist and bigoted "joke" made at her expense and I am sickened that any Black or Muslim person has to keep hearing this sickness in 2018," she wrote.
Some tweeted their support for the actress, including English media personality Katie Hopkins.

"Never apologise @therealroseanne It only encourages the (expletive). Stand Strong," she wrote with the hashtag #MAGA (Make America Great Again).
Rosie O'Donnell called Barr's tweets "racist" and "childish" but overall seemed to accept the fellow actress's apology.

So is it just a joke or racism, @Rosie? You seem to defend @therealroseanne quite a bit.
i love roseanne quite a bit

the comment roseanne tweeted was racist and childish
and beneath her best self
she has apologized

twitter is a dangerous place
"i love roseanne quite a bit... the comment roseanne tweeted was racist and childish and beneath her best self she has apologized... twitter is a dangerous place," she tweeted.
Actor Tom Arnold, who played Arnie Thomas in the orginial Roseanne series, also weighed in.

Anyone who worked on "Roseanne" 88'-94' knows there's a 50% chance Rosey calls me today & tells me to go fire Donald Trump.
They also know there's 100% chance I'd show up at the White House, give him 5 mins to say goodbye & get his crap before I through him & it out the window.

This isn't the first time Barr has taken heat for her controversial views and pro-Trump statements. She returned to Twitter in March after taking a break from the social media site in December following an online feud with people who responded harshly to her tweets praising President Trump and criticizing his election foe, Hillary Clinton, and former president Obama.
The Roseanne reboot has also received backlash for some of its controversial jokes, including jabs at at minority-led series Black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat.
The show, which attracted a whopping 18.2 million viewers in its return to ABC in March after a 21-year absence, also stirred debate in the comedian community, including a Twitter debate between star comedians Kumail Nanjiani, Billy Eichner and Sarah Silverman the same month.
